- Komplett subkultur
Letts har også laget den legendariske The Clash-dokumentaren «Westway to the World», og senere spilte han sammen med Mick Jones i Big Audio Dynamite.

I filmen forklarer blant annet Tommy Ramone hemmeligheten bak suksessen til The Ramones.

- Idealet var treminutters-låta. Men siden vi spilte så fort, ble sangene i stedet på halvannet minutt.

Drop the makeup?

Why would you say that? Guys should wear makeup just as much as the girls, and green day (among others) are showing the world that it's ok for guys too. I like them for that, allthough they're not my favourite punk band.. What do you think about their latest album? the texts are quite good, and full of emotions. I sucks that I live so very far away from Tromsø, I would loved to see you.
    Innsendt av: meg
I've got no problem with guys wearing makeup. In the past, I've worn makeup myself.

It's just when you're trying to look like you're sixteen, and you obviously ain't.

Thank you all for your interest, but unfortunately I'm being dragged away by Richard Hell. I'm sure you understand.

Don Letts

Nice titties too ;-)

Thanx for replying to Slits vs TG. Not many liked TG, thats what drew my atention in the first place.
    "wreckers of civilization.." and crap.
    I still enjoy them!
    Cheers

    Innsendt av: Jarle
It's all about taste. Lucky I've got some.

Don Letts

King Django

Do you know anything about King Django and his music?
    Innsendt av: Tor
No.

Don Letts

Produce me

What does it take to make you produce my next record?
    Innsendt av: John Bender
If I like it, we could talk further.

Don Letts

You may know...

Does there exist any films of The Congos?

    HOT

    Oslo

    Ps. Loved "One love"
    Innsendt av: HOT
Not to my knowledge. Funnily enough, Johnny Rotten and I spent time with them when we were in Jamaica.

Don Letts

hello! my name is jon ole and i am a drummer...

what do you look for in a drummer?
what can I do for beeing a better drummer and musician?

heey

what is the best whit clash?
    Innsendt av: kevster
All of it.

Don Letts

Thanks!

Salute! A lot of rubbish here, but I guess you hear "how about Green Day" quite often. I've got nothing else to say, but thanks for your work! I totally agree with you about the organic sound. I've been looking for the word "organic" ever since I discovered Skatalites 20 years ago.
    Innsendt av: Terje
Respect!

Don Letts

    are you stupid??
    Innsendt av: alla
Frequently.

Since I've taken time to respond to your intelligent question.

Don Letts

Is it true that it was you who introduced the clash to the song "police and thieves" ? I've also heard that Lee Perry hatet their version.. ?
    Innsendt av: Dan Drehn
I introduced a lot of punks to reggae, with three exceptions. Joe Strummer, Johnny Rotten and Paul Simonon.

And it's true, Lee Perry said they ruined it.

Boy, did he get that wrong.

Don Letts

Definition

How do you decribe -a punk- and what new punkbands do you think is good these days? I personally had an essay on Sex Pistols and The Clash, and I think none of the newer are as good as them. And why did you choose punk? hugs!
    Innsendt av: Pia
By definition you can't describe it, because it should continuously reinvent itself.

I'm black, I was born a punk. There was no choice. Hugs back.

Don Letts

cultural dialogue

You appear to me as a man who has some experience as a cultural conveyor. I am a student currently working on a project for the norwegian Museum of Cultural History. The project is basically concerned about how the museum can revitalize its´s vision ( and mission?) as conveyors of cultural understanding and perhaps initiating dialogue across so called cultural barriers. Do you have any general thoughts about how the museum can accomplish this? What in your opinion is the most essential when it comes to accomplishing/establishing understanding, dialogue and respect between people of different cultures living in the same community?
    Innsendt av: Leif H. Skauerud
The punk/reggae connection taught me that it was understanding our differences that brought us closer together, not by all trying to be the same.

Don Letts

Jah Wobble

I boght the first album of Jah Wobble in 1980 after he left PIL, and was quite fascinated of his music. Surprised to discover recently that he still is in business. Bought some of his latest works, and how good it is! Excellent bass player he is, but to my surprice I heard that it was Sid Vicious that taught him to play the bass guitar. I allways thought that Sid Vicious was hopeless on that instrument. Is this story true? Do you have anything to do with Wobbles latest projects? What is your idea about them?
    Innsendt av: Paal
Sid didn't teach anybody to play anything.

He was a loser. Not somebody to emulate. I made a record with Wobble once, it was rubbish.

Don Letts

Hello

    Hello!

Who does you think is the best punk-band?

    You are very, very cool!
    YOU ARE THE BEST!
    You are my idol!
    Innsendt av: Eline Hansen
I hope I haven't heard them yet.

But if they're calling themselves punk, then they ain't.

Don Letts

Black people

    Haloo!

What music were the black people in Brixton into in 76-77?

    Innsendt av: Bozzi
We were split into two factions: Those that were trying to emulate the American experience, so they were digging soul.

Me and my crew was predictably into reggea. And that was reggea's most creative period. King Tubby, Lee Perry, Bunny Lee etc.

Don Letts

You're in the wrong country!

Hi man! I'm in Kingston, Jamaica now and I don't exactly envy you being in Tromsoe. hehe! What's your connection to Jamaica and what would recommend me doing here, except going to the Leeroy Sibbles Birthday Bash (Barrington Levy was wicked) and to Sound Systems? What would you say are the most prevalent similarities between punk and reggae (except both being rebel music) and what are the greatest differances? Much respect
    Innsendt av: Steffen Mussche
I'm of Jamaican descent. I made a movie called "Dancehall Queen", you might have heard of it.

Every generation needs it's own soundtrack. Reggae was mine. Punk was theirs.

Don Letts

where?

Where can i find any photos and/or articles from your trip to jamaica with john lydon?
Is tromsø the only place you are gonna play while you are here?
    Innsendt av: dirty mack
Dennis Morris was the photographer on that trip.

Yes, Tromsø is the only place I'm playing.

Don Letts

RATM

Waht do you think about Rage Against The Machine?
    Innsendt av: Marius Drabløs
Great group.

One of the best live shows I've ever seen (Glastonbury).

Don Letts

    did rudy fail after all?
    Innsendt av: jimmy jazz
I don't think I have.

Don Letts

Hello again good old D!

WoW! Haven't heard from (or about for that matter) you since the mid-70's when I lived in Littlehampton. Trips to (and in...) Chelsea used to be a whiz. Remember the antiquarius? Kings Road I believe. What have you been up to these last 20-odd years? Kids, wife and a Volvo, or still chasing ghosts and broads with John L and the other hefty guys? I've fallen out - totally... All the best!
    From Alf (the Gitfaced Noggie...)
    Innsendt av: Alf Eliassen
Wife, kids and BMW.

But punk rock continues to serve me on a day to day basis.

Somebody's got to keep the fire burning.

Don Letts

Hi mate!

Dude, I wanna know what your consept is in the music you make. Peace.
    Innsendt av: Freddy
I don't have a concept, or a master plan. It's instinctive. And lucky for me, I've got good taste.

Don Letts

Body parts

What's the ugliest part of your body?
    Innsendt av: Suzy Creamcheese
My extra testicle.

Don Letts

Hottie!

    you're hot!
    =)=)
    Innsendt av: Ise
Where do you live?

Don Letts

Hi

Hi, i was just wondering, how was Joe Strummer as a person?
And...What is your personal favourite Clash-song?
    Innsendt av: thore
He walked it like he talked it. About as real as you can get. And these people come along once in a blue moon.

In the tradition of people like Woody Guthrie, Dylan, Lennon, Marley.

Don Letts

the clash vs. avril

    hello.
i love the clash. i love the ramones. i love sex pistols. i love patti smith. and i love you.
my freeinds are just laughing, but i think they love me anyway. and i love them, of course.

ashlee simpson & that avril lavigne-bitch should be... well. i can't write that here, i suppose. but you get the point? i do NOT love them. i laugh at them of course, but i hate them for everything they and their cheerleaders-bimboes have done to punk - or "punk". wearing tight pants, converse all star and leather jacket doesn't make you a punk rocker. wanna be a girlie punk rocker - don't just LOOK at patti smith; listen to the music!

this is not a quest for you, i just wanted to say: I love punk and f*** them covergirls.

    GABBA GABBA HEY

    peace
    Innsendt av:
I'm with you all the way.

I love you too.

Don Letts

>Bands to see

Are there any bands at Bylarm you want to see?
    Innsendt av: Gunnar
Yes, but I don't know who they are.

Looking forward to seeing Richard Hell.

Don Letts

How do you like Tromsø?

    Colder than London?
    Innsendt av: Trondheim e bæst
Looks great from the inside.

Black people don't like snow.

Don Letts

the current british guitar scene

    Hi!

Are Arctic Monkeys anywhere near as talented as The Clash?
    Innsendt av: Monkeyman
We have yet to find out.

But they've used the punk DIY ethic, and it got them to no. 1. Respect The Arctic Monkeys.

Don Letts

Punk

How is it to be a punk? Is it cool? I think your hair look pretty good. Can you tell me a little about how it is to be a punk? Must punks have the same style like all the other punks? Can you tell me a little facts about punks? The style, music etc.

    PeaCe!
    Innsendt av: Trude Auby
If you have to be told, you'll never know. But most importantly, it's an attitude.

It's not something you take out of the wardrobe and wear for a day.

Don Letts

The punk of today

What's your view on the punk rock of today, e.g. NOFX, Bad Religion, Dropkick Murphys and the likes? Are you one of those who think that punk's dead?
    Innsendt av: Bob
No, punk is alive and well. It's just not called punk.

You can be silent and deadly too.

Don Letts

hair

are you gonna get a haircut soon? :P
    Innsendt av: TtotheJ
When you get to my age, you start to loose your hair anyway. So cutting it would be kind of stupid.

Why rush the inevitable?

Don Letts

HEEEY

    How's John Lydon like?
    Innsendt av: Mini-Me
What you see is what you get.

Don Letts

Rancid and Green Day

What do you think about Rancid and Green Day? For me, these two bands, got me into punk rock and The Clash among others.
    Innsendt av: Cabot
I guess Rancid are still flying the traditional punk flag in a country where it need to be flown.

Green Day: "American Idiot" is an interesting album because the audience they're talking to needs to know that stuff. But maybe they should dump the makeup.

Don Letts

Do u like Uk Bhangra?

    ???

And have u listened to Dj Swami`s Subculture...?

Do u listen to Uk Bhangra?

    Big Up Massive!
    Innsendt av: DJ Swami-Fan!
Bhangra is passé. Asian Dub Foundation are one of my favourite bands.

Don Letts

Norwegian punk

What do you think of Norwegian punkrock nowadays?
    Innsendt av: The boiler
I know nothing about Norwegian punk rock, but willing to find out any tips.

Don Letts

Venues

Do you got any knowledge about any Norwegian punk-rock venues?
    Innsendt av: Lon Detts
No. Any good tips?

Don Letts

The Slits vs TG

Do you by any chance know why The Slits hated Throbbing Gristle? I´m refereing to the incident at London Film Co-op in -79, where they attacked the audience, TG and R. Rentals 4yo son. Was it something political or just for the hell of it??
    Cheers!
    Innsendt av: Jarle
I have no recollection of the incident. But I do remember none of us liked Throbbing Gristle.

PS: I've heard that Genesis P. Orridge now has breasts!

Don Letts

The Most Beautiful Animal in the World

You must have travelled all around the world.

Could you recommend a nice Zoo with Giraffes?

    Innsendt av: Bolleh
Don't like animals in cages. Can I get some of what you're smoking?

Don Letts

hi maaaaaaaaan

when you were sixteen years old, how did you thought about you future? what did you want to to when you grew old? what is your meaning of life?
    Innsendt av: i
When I was sixteen, I knew I didn't want to spend the rest of my life as a fan.

Punk showed me a way forward. It told me that if you're brave enough, and you have a good idea, you can be a part of this thing too.

Don Letts

Out Of Order

What so mighty about the sound of Trojan?
Innsendt av: Mr. Know It All
If you're Mr. Know It All, why are you asking questions?

Don Letts

Yellowcard

You, as a punk-legend, what do you think about the new punk-music. Or, poppunk as it is. Like bands as Yellowcard? What are your thoughts about them
    Innsendt av: Thomas
I'm not a fan of bands that call themselves punks. It's not about loud guitars. You can be silent and deadly too.

Don Letts

High!

I`ve seen you in alot of documentaries about cannabis, and was just wondering; what is your take on the british goverments "flip-flopping" concerning the reclassification of cannabis? How do you feel about the "war on drugs" in general?

Sort of off-topic, but had to ask. Enjoy your stay in norway!
    Innsendt av: BHicks
Drugs are bad, weed is good. Where can I get some?

Don Letts

Favourite bands

What are your favourite punk or reggae bands? I like punk, and also traditional songs, therefore i like listening to Me First And The Gimme Gimmes. They play punk covers of classic songs like San Fransisco, Dont Cry For Me Argentina and so on.
    Innsendt av: Henrik Nordli
My favourite punk bands are the ones that don't call themselves punks.

I like reggae with real basslines, not a great fan of the digital shit. I like when it's organic. And they're smoking weed, not taking crack.

Don Letts

latino

do you know of any latino punkbands?
    Innsendt av: bill
No.

Don Letts

The unanswerable question?

This is kinda the ultimate Punk Rock question, I guess. It's a faved discussion in countless pubs and bars and at gigs and parties and - yeah - discussion boards all 'round the web; where and when (in your opinion) did it (punk rock) all actually start? In a globally perspective, I mean. Some say it didn't really happen until the mid seventies in England and some (me included) have reached the conclusion that it never would have happened anything at all if it weren't for Mr. Reed and that lot in sixties New York (and 'course the Motor City guys outta Detroit).

Am I raving? Whaddaya think, man?
    Innsendt av: The Driver
Yes, you're raving. My film "Punk Attitude" starts with Jerry Lee Lewis jumping up and down on the piano. And he was late.

The punk attitude existed before music. Read Albert Camus, look at the films of Louis Bunuel, study the art of Marcel Duchamps, listen to the humour of Lenny Bruce, read Charles Bukowski.

Do you get my drift?

Don Letts

nice dreads!!!

how do you keep them so fresh? mine is very dry.. sorry that my english sucks...

i love punk by the way.. thank you for the clash!!!
    Innsendt av: monica
No disrespect, any fool can grow hair. It's what's in your head, not on your head, that's important.

Don Letts

Best band

OI ! What is the best punk band now-a-days ?
Whats your favorite punk song ever ?
    Innsendt av: Henning PunkRocker
I think most of the popular music today is the last place to find punk spirit.

<
However, there are many people operating below the radar that continue the spirit, and it's not just in music.

Don Letts

punk

What's your view on the current punk/hardcore underground?
Why do you think punk as a movement has survived all these years as opposed to other sub/counterculture movements?
    Innsendt av: F
I think if you call yourself a punk, you're probably not.

The reason it has lasted so long is that the punk attitude is as important today as it was back then. In fact, if you look at the current state of popular culture, it's even more important.

Don Letts

howdy! yu is cool!

who does you think is the best punk-band? the clash or sex pistols? i think the clash has put a lot of feelings in their songs, while sex pistols has a lot of enthusiasm in their songs! this is cool! at least that is who i thinks!

    Innsendt av: Håvard Håkon
The Sex Pistols made you wanna smash your head against the wall.

The Clash gave you a reason!

Both were valid.

Don Letts

Hellu.

Is that a giant squid on your head?
    Innsendt av: kurt nilsen
It's that the best you can do? Time is valuable.
