Politician's wife takes wrong turn, drives down palace staircase

OSLO, Norway (AP) - The wife of leading politician Carl I. Hagen dropped him off at the Royal Palace - and then drove down the staircase.

The car, which belongs to Hagen's Party of Progress, bounced down the 17 concrete steps, leaving skid marks on each one.

Eli Hagen was shaken but unhurt, and the incident made front-page news Friday.

«Eli drove down the stairs because it is easy to make a mistake due to poor markings,» Hagen was quoted as telling the Oslo newspaper Verdens Gang. She mistook the staircase for a road as she was heading home.

Hagen went to the palace Thursday night for King Harald V's annual banquet for national lawmakers.

According to the state radio network NRK, Mrs. Hagen is not the first to have taken that bumpy route, with at least two taxis and a diplomatic car making the same mistake in recent years.

Private roads to the palace run parallel on either side of the stairs and are closed to normal traffic. The palace said it would consider better road markers.
